What is a Noun?

A noun is a word used as the name of a person, place, thing, or idea.

Examples

  • Person: Rama, Gopal, teacher

  • Place: India, school, river

  • Thing: book, pen, table

  • Idea: honesty, happiness, love

Types of Nouns

1. Proper Noun

A proper noun is the name of a particular person, place, or thing. Always begins with a capital letter. Examples: Rama, India, Delhi

2. Common Noun

A common noun is the name of any person, place, or thing of the same kind. Examples: boy, teacher, city

3. Collective Noun

A collective noun is the name of a group. Examples: class, team, flock

4. Abstract Noun

An abstract noun is the name of a feeling, quality, or idea. Examples: honesty, happiness, courage

Countable and Uncountable Nouns

Countable Nouns

Countable nouns can be counted and have singular and plural forms. Examples: book, pen, apple Example Sentences: I have three books. There are many chairs in the hall.

Uncountable Nouns

Uncountable nouns cannot be counted and usually do not have plural forms. Examples: water, milk, rice, honesty Example Sentences: Please give me some water. We need little sugar.
