Between, Among, or Amid? How to Choose the Right Preposition

English prepositions can be tricky, especially when they all seem to mean "in the middle of something." While Between, Among, and Amid share similar meanings, they are used in very different ways.

Mastering these will not only help you in your school exams (like the AISSEE) but also improve your everyday writing. Let’s break them down!

1. Between

The Rule: Use "Between" when referring to two distinct, separate people, objects, or points.

  • Relationship: It connects two specific things.

  • Example: "The apple fell between the two chairs."

  • Special Case: You can use "between" for more than two things if they are distinct and named.

    • Example: "The trade agreement was signed between India, France, and Germany."

2. Among

The Rule: Use "Among" when referring to three or more people or things that are seen as a group rather than individuals.

  • Relationship: It implies being part of a crowd or a mass.

  • Example: "The teacher distributed the sweets among the students."

  • Usage Tip: If you can't count the individuals easily because they are a group, use "Among."

3. Amid (or Amidst)

The Rule: Use "Amid" when you are in the middle of something that is not necessarily a group of people/objects, but an uncountable atmosphere or environment (like noise, chaos, or excitement).

  • Relationship: Being "surrounded by" a condition or a large mass.

  • Example: "The little house stood amid the tall trees." or "He stayed calm amid the chaos."

  • Usage Tip: "Amid" is more formal than "among" and is often used in literature or news reports.
