Master Prepositions of Movement: Along, Around, Across, and Through

When we talk about how someone or something moves, we use prepositions of movement. These words tell us the path or direction of the action. Four of the most frequently used (and sometimes confused) prepositions are Along, Around, Across, and Through.

In this guide, we will break down exactly how to use each one so you never make a mistake again!

1. Along

Definition: Moving in a line next to something long, like a road, a river, or a path.

  • Think of it as: Following a line.

  • Example: "We took a peaceful walk along the riverbank."

  • Usage Tip: Use "along" when the movement stays parallel to the edge of something.

2. Around

Definition: Moving in a circle or a curved path, or surrounding something.

  • Think of it as: A circular movement.

  • Example: "The earth travels around the sun." or "She ran around the park three times."

  • Usage Tip: Use "around" when the movement follows the perimeter or avoids the center of an object.

3. Across

Definition: Moving from one side to the other of a flat surface or a defined area.

  • Think of it as: Crossing a line or a boundary.

  • Example: "The children ran across the road." or "He swam across the lake."

  • Usage Tip: We use "across" for 2D surfaces (like a field or a map).

4. Through

Definition: Moving from one side to the other inside a three-dimensional space, such as a tunnel, a forest, or a crowd.

  • Think of it as: Being "inside" while moving.

  • Example: "The train went through the tunnel." or "The sunlight filtered through the trees."

  • Usage Tip: Use "through" when there are things all around you (3D) as you move.
