Mastering Direct and Indirect Speech: A Comprehensive Guide

When we report what someone said, we usually move the tense one step back into the past. We also need to change pronouns and time expressions to match the current perspective.

The Transformation Rules

Direct SpeechIndirect Speech
Present SimplePast Simple
Present ContinuousPast Continuous
Present PerfectPast Perfect
Past SimplePast Perfect
Will / Can / MayWould / Could / Might

Changes in Time and Place

  • Now $\rightarrow$ Then

  • Today $\rightarrow$ That day

  • Tomorrow 2$\rightarrow$ The next day / The following day3

  • Yesterday $\rightarrow$ The day before / The previous day

  • Here $\rightarrow$ There

Teacher's Secret Tip: If the statement is a universal truth (e.g., "The sun rises in the east"), the tense does not change even if the reporting verb is in the past!
