Mastering "Not Only... But Also"

This pair is a Correlative Conjunction. This means these two parts are like best friends—they always work together to connect two related ideas, giving the second idea a bit of extra "punch."

The Golden Rules

  1. The Parallelism Rule: Whatever follows "not only" must match what follows "but also."

    • Correct: She is not only a singer (noun) but also a dancer (noun).

    • Incorrect: She is not only singing (verb) but also a dancer (noun).

  2. The Proximity Rule (Subject-Verb Agreement): If you are joining two subjects, the verb must agree with the subject closest to it.

    • Example: Not only the teacher but also the students are laughing.

    • Example: Not only the students but also the teacher is laughing.
