Prepositions of Movement: To, Into, and Onto
Prepositions of movement tell us where something or someone is going.
They are used with action verbs like go, walk, run, jump, throw, and put.
The three most common prepositions of movement are to, into, and onto.
Though they look simple, their meanings are different.
1. TO – Direction Only
To shows movement towards a place, but it does not show entering or touching a surface.
Use to when:
-
The movement is only in the direction of a place.
-
The action ends near or at a place.
Examples:
-
She went to school.
-
I am going to the market.
-
He walked to the door.
-
We travelled to Delhi.
Note: We do not know if the person entered the place.
“He went to the room” does not mean he went inside.
2. INTO – Movement Inside
Into shows movement from outside to inside an enclosed space.
Use into when:
-
Someone or something enters a room, box, building, or container.
Examples:
-
The boy ran into the room.
-
She put the books into the bag.
-
The cat jumped into the box.
-
Pour the milk into the glass.
Tip: If you can ask “Did it go inside?”, the answer is into.
3. ONTO – Movement onto a Surface
Onto shows movement from a lower level to a surface.
Use onto when:
-
Someone or something moves up and touches a surface.
Examples:
-
The child climbed onto the bed.
-
The ball rolled onto the road.
-
He jumped onto the stage.
-
She placed the plate onto the table.
Tip: If you can ask “Did it land on a surface?”, use onto.
