10 CLASS SSC Examination-English grammar-Usage of ARTICLES
The Article Cheat Sheet: SSC Edition
In English, we have two types of articles. Think of them as the "Any" vs. the "Specific."
1. Indefinite Articles: A & An (The "Any" Rule)
Use these when you’re talking about something in general.
Use 'A': Before words starting with a consonant sound (e.g., a book, a pilot).
Use 'An': Before words starting with a vowel sound ($a, e, i, o, u$).
⚠️ The Trap: It’s about the SOUND, not the letter!
An hour (The 'h' is silent, sounds like 'ow').
A university (The 'u' sounds like 'yoo'—a consonant sound!).
2. Definite Article: The (The "Specific" Rule)
Use this when there is only one of something or you’ve mentioned it before.
Unique things: The Sun, The Moon, The Sky.
Superlatives: The tallest building, The best student.
Geography: The Himalayas, The Ganga, The Atlantic Ocean.
Musical Instruments: He plays the flute.
3. The "Zero Article" (When to say nothing)
Sometimes, you don't need an article at all. Skip it for:
Proper Names (don't say "The Rahul").
Abstract Nouns (e.g., "Honesty is the best policy").
General Plurals (e.g., "Cats love milk").
