SUBJECT AND PREDICATE

The Golden Rule for Finding Subject and Predicate

Before we look at the specific sentences, here is the easiest trick to figure this out every time:

  1. Find the Verb: First, identify the action or state of being in the sentence.

  2. Ask "Who?" or "What?": Put "Who" or "What" directly in front of that verb. The answer to that question is your Subject.

  3. The Rest is Predicate: Everything else in the sentence (including the verb itself) tells us something about the subject, making it the Predicate.

Here is the breakdown for the first ten sentences applying this rule.

1. The cackling of geese saved Rome.

  • Verb: saved

  • Ask: What saved Rome? -> The cackling of geese. (Subject)

  • Predicate: What did the cackling of geese do? -> saved Rome.

5. The singing of the birds delights us.

  • Verb: delights

  • Ask: What delights us? -> The singing of the birds. (Subject) (Note: The whole phrase acts together as the subject, not just "birds" or "singing".)

  • Predicate: What does the singing do? -> delights us.

  • Verb: was

  • Ask: Who was rude? -> Miss Kitty. (Subject)
