Exercise 2: Sentences 11–20

11. He kept the fast for a week.

  • Word: Fast

  • Part of Speech: Noun

  • Reason: It is the name of a thing (the period of abstaining from food). It is also preceded by the article "the," which usually signals a noun.

12. He is on the committee.

  • Word: On

  • Part of Speech: Preposition

  • Reason: It shows the relationship between "the committee" (its object) and the person "He."

13. Let us move on.

  • Word: On

  • Part of Speech: Adverb

  • Reason: It modifies the verb "move" by indicating the direction or continuance of the action. It does not have an object following it.

14. Sit down and rest a while.

  • Word: While

  • Part of Speech: Noun

  • Reason: It denotes a period of time. In this context, it is the object of the (implied) preposition "for" or simply functions as a noun indicating duration.

15. I will watch while you sleep.

  • Word: While

  • Part of Speech: Conjunction

  • Reason: It joins two separate clauses: "I will watch" and "you sleep." It connects these two thoughts together.

  • 16. They while away their evenings with books and games.

    • Reason: In this sentence, while expresses an action. To "while away" means to pass time in a leisurely or pleasant manner. It tells us what "They" (the subject) are doing with their evenings.
