usage of PREPOSITIONS-SSC 10 class-board examination-English grammar

The Big Three: In, On, and At

These are the most common troublemakers. Think of them as a pyramid moving from General to Specific.

1. Prepositions of Time

  • IN (General): Used for months, years, centuries, and long periods.

    • Example: "I will pass my SSC exams in 2026."

  • ON (More Specific): Used for days and dates.

    • Example: "The exam starts on Monday."

  • AT (Very Specific): Used for precise times.

    • Example: "The bell rings at 11:00 AM."

2. Prepositions of Place

  • IN (Enclosed space): In a room, in Maharashtra.

  • ON (Surface): On the table, on the blackboard.

  • AT (Point): At the entrance, at the bus stop.

⚠️ The "Confusion Zone": Don't Fall for These!

Preposition PairThe Difference
Between vs. AmongBetween is for two people/things. Among is for a group (three or more).
Since vs. ForSince marks a specific starting point (1947). For marks a duration (10 years).
Beside vs. BesidesBeside means next to. Besides means "in addition to."
Into vs. InIn shows position (static). Into shows movement/entry.

Pro-Tip: SSC examiners love to test Fixed Prepositions. Some words always go together, like "Aim at," "Congratulate on," and "Interested in." Memorize these pairs!
