Exercise 3: Adjectives and Their Nouns
1. The ship sustained heavy damage.
Adjective: heavy
Noun it qualifies: damage
Reason: It tells us the extent or degree of the damage.
2. I have called several times.
Adjective: several
Noun it qualifies: times
Reason: This is an Adjective of Number (Indefinite), telling us "how many" times.
3. Every dog has his day.
Adjectives: Every, his
Nouns they qualify: dog (Every), day (his)
Reason: "Every" is a Distributive Numeral Adjective; "his" is a Pronominal (Possessive) Adjective.
4. A live ass is better than a dead lion.
Adjectives: live, dead
Nouns they qualify: ass (live), lion (dead)
Reason: Both are Adjectives of Quality, describing the state of the animals.
5. Every man has his duties.
Adjectives: Every, his
Nouns they qualify: man (Every), duties (his)
Reason: "Every" individualizes the noun "man"; "his" shows possession of the "duties."
6. Say shall we part and never meet again?
Note: There are no descriptive adjectives in this sentence. (Words like "never" and "again" are Adverbs).
7. He was a man of few words.

Noun it qualifies: words
Reason: An Adjective of Number, indicating a small quantity.

Reason: A Distributive Numeral Adjective used to point out one of two parties.
