WREN & MARTIN's English grammar made easy-parts of speech
The 8 Parts of Speech (In Brief)
Think of these as the "roles" words play in a sentence.
Noun: A name of a person, place, animal, thing, or idea (e.g., Edison, London, Courage).
Pronoun: A word used instead of a noun to avoid repetition (e.g., He, She, They, It).
Adjective: A word that adds something to the meaning of a noun or pronoun; it describes (e.g., Brave boy, Five apples).
Verb: A word that expresses an action or a state of being (e.g., Run, Is, Think, Wrote).
Adverb: A word that modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. It often tells how, when, or where (e.g., Ran quickly, Very sweet).
Preposition: A word used with a noun or pronoun to show its relation to something else (e.g., The cat is under the table).
Conjunction: A word used to join words or sentences (e.g., Ram and Hari; He is poor but honest).
Interjection: A word which expresses some sudden feeling (e.g., Hurrah! Alas! Oh!).
