Exercise 2: Identifying Parts of Speech
Here are the first 10 sentences from that exercise with the classifications and reasons.
1. Still waters run deep.
Word: Still
Part of Speech: Adjective
Reason: It adds something to the meaning of the noun "waters" (it describes the waters).
2. He still lives in that house.
Word: Still
Part of Speech: Adverb
Reason: It modifies the verb "lives" by telling us about the time/continuance of the action.
3. After the storm comes the calm.
Word: After
Part of Speech: Preposition
Reason: It shows the relation between "the storm" (its object) and the rest of the sentence.
4. The after effects of the drug are bad.

Reason: It describes the noun "effects."
5. The up train is late.

Reason: It qualifies the noun "train" (tells us which train).
6. It weighs about a pound.

Reason: It modifies the adjective/number "a pound" by expressing an approximate degree.

Reason: It shows the relationship between "the battle" and the verb "told."
